Blessed By the Servant-Hearted and Blessed To Serve

By Kiara Thomas, 1WAY FM Volunteer Communication Assistant

At my church lately, several faithful young men and women have been called to lead small groups. I have had the chance to build friendships with these people and see them grow in their faith. It has been incredible to see God’s hand at work. I, however, have not been called to this ministry due to physical limitations. This is the point where I could sit at home and watch Netflix, but I know that I am “God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for [me] to do” (Eph 2:10).

Six years ago, when I was a teenager, I was living with a long-term illness that left me homebound and unable to attend church or school. Despite this, our God, in his goodness, provided me with a chance to stay connected to the Christian community. I was able to tune in to 1WAY FM. This chance to hear good Christian music, to be encouraged spiritually, to have company during a long day at home alone, and to have a Christ-centred, hope-filled message available to me at the push of a button was so encouraging.

By God’s grace, my health has improved, and I have been able to start studying communication at university. On the 22nd of July 2022, I began to pray for an opportunity to work for 1WAY FM. To be able to use my passion for communication to minister to others, to gain invaluable work experience in my area of study, and to do it for an organisation that I love was a dream I did not want to let go of.

In God’s good timing, the opportunity to join the team at 1WAY FM arose. I have been a volunteer for 1WAY FM since January 2023. I’ve had the chance to make social media graphics and to write articles about everything from pancake giveaways to Mission Aviation Fellowship pilots. It has certainly been exciting to have these assignments land on my desk.

Sometimes, our limitations feel insurmountable, but they cannot stop us from praying, nor can they stop us from encouraging one another and building each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11; 5:17). God uses everyone, no matter their ability, no matter their season of life. God gives each of us gifts and passions to use to love and serve one another and to build His Kingdom.

1WAY FM not only has the potentiality to reach many people for Jesus, but it also offers a unique opportunity for many people to serve within it. I cannot stack chairs after church, but God has called me to serve Him through 1WAY FM’s communications team. I have been incredibly blessed by the people I work with, by the people who help me get to work each week, and by the Christian community that I serve here in Canberra. I have been blessed by the servant-hearted and I am blessed to serve.
