Haiti, the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere, is suffering from 200 years of intense social, political and economic turmoil. Today, 80 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, 70 per cent are unemployed and after years of deforestation, only three per cent of Haiti’s forests remain, increasing its vulnerability to natural disasters. Children make up 54 per cent of the population and are the hardest hit by poverty. One Haitian child in every five will die before their fifth birthday from malnutrition or disease.
