Through Charles Sturt University, StΒ Mark’s will be offering European Reformations,1400-1700 as evening classes in Canberra during Session 2. European Reformations, 1400-1700 charts the history of one of the most fascinating and influential periods in world history. Martin Luther’s criticisms of the Church, aided by technological innovations such as the printing press, precipitated the creation of Protestant churches in Europe. As we shall see, however, the Protestant challenge spurred reform and renewal within the Roman Catholic Church. This coincided with the β€˜Age of Discovery’ and the expansion of Europe (and western Christianity with it) into a global power from the 1400s onwards. Roman Catholic missions took the Church’s message to the Far East, India, China and the Americas. Closer to home, rivalry with Islam was an ever-present reality on the borders of Europe. While the impact of the Reformation was a factor in major wars and political realignments in Europe and Great Britain, its influence was further felt in literature, philosophy, economics, architecture, science and the arts.

Course runs from 13 July 2016 – 12 October 2016.
