Despite being held at gun-point on her first day in Uganda, Aussie school teacher Trishelle Sayuuni (nee Grady). not only stayed, but she become ‘mum’ to hundreds of local children, giving them hope and a future.
Trishelle, founder of Aussie charity 100% hOPE, will be arriving in Canberra on Friday 15 March until Wednesday 20 March with a small group of vulnerable Ugandan children and youth. They will be visiting several local schools, community groups and churches with the inspiring message: “Never Give Up – no matter how tough life gets!”The 10 children form the 100% hOPE Ugandan Children’s Choir and will be visiting Canberra as part of their tour from Rockhampton to Melbourne, sharing traditional Acapella African singing, drumming and dancing with Aussie families. The Choir are hoping to return at the end of their three-month trip with enough funds to finish building their school in hOPE Village, in Mityana, Uganda, which currently ends at year 4 – including the school’s first ever computer room and assembly hall.
The public are invited to their FREE concerts on Sunday March 17 at 10am at Taylor School, Marconi Cres, Kambah, and at 4.30pm in Queanbeyan. For details visit www.100-hope.org. A free-will donation will be taken at the end of the concert.
Students at several Canberra schools will experience the energy and joy of Africa, as well as gain an insight into how different life can be as the Choir share their challenging stories.
Volunteer Canberra organiser Therese Richards said the Choir was both educational and inspiring for Aussie school kids. “We can’t all go to Africa, but by bringing a bit of Uganda to us, the hOPE Choir is helping our children to see that helping others is not only lots of fun, but really does change lives.”

100% of funds donated to 100% hOPE go towards projects in hOPE school and village as all the registered charity’s Australian staff are volunteers. hOPE Village includes homes for over 130 orphaned or vulnerable children, a babies home, vegetable gardens, a forestry project, vocational training and a piggery sponsored by AusAID.
