Bringing Hope Behind Bars

Bringing Hope Behind Bars

In Australia, there are currently more than 41,000 prisoners in custody. While these people are incarcerated, there is a unique opportunity to reach them with the Good News of the Bible and God’s Word.

From 15th February to 5th March 2021, Bible League’s Bringing Hope Behind Bars Campaign will partner with 17 Christian radio stations across Australia. With this partnership, we aim to meet an initial goal of 3,500 Bibles. Each year the total need in Australian prisons is about 5,500 – 6,000 Bibles.

Bible League CEO, Hilton Edwards, expressed his excitement at being able to partner with the radio stations and share God’s Word with so many. “We are so excited to be partnering with Christian radio stations around Australia to make a real and lasting difference in thousands of prisoners’ lives,” Hilton said. “This continues the great work we have done in prisons over the past five years.”

The Prison Bible is translated into a prisoner’s language, helping them to see that there is a loving God who cares about them and loves them.

“Gabriella had received a Prison Bible and one day, during our time together she pulled out a piece of paper from the Bible with a poem she had written about how she felt about being in prison. I heard God say one word over and over as she recited her poem. The word was ‘justice’, and seemingly had nothing to do with what she was reading! That one word was God beginning a journey of restoration in a woman’s life that only God can do. The crimes that had led Gabriella into prison began as she was hurt as a child, and never saw justice for them. I have learnt that God loves to heal the person, not just what they’ve done in the crime. Gabriella is learning that God treasures her. When I met Gabriella, she had served 5 years of a 20-year sentence and was still unsettled, not knowing how to make up for the people she had hurt, and to her ‘God was just an angry man upstairs’. Today she is facing her past hurts and God is helping her heal. Gabriella has become ‘strong and courageous,’ just as the Bible teaches her to be, and she has very real and growing relationship with the Lord.” Dee – Prison Fellowship Volunteer

The Prison Bible

Bible League’s Prison Bible Project, Bringing Hope Behind Bars, uses this opportunity to shine God’s light into the lives of prisoners in Australia.

“The Spirit of the Lord God is on me. The Lord has chosen me to tell good news to the poor and to comfort those who are sad. He sent me to tell the captives and prisoners that they have been set free. 2 He sent me to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness, when our God will also punish evil people. He has sent me to comfort those who are sad”. Isaiah 61:1-2 ERV

Bible League has worked with a translation team to specifically design the Prison Bible for prisoners. The text is easy to read and understand. In addition, 52 lesson plans at the beginning of the Bible teach about topics such as:

  • Following Jesus Inside of Prison;
  • Seeking Forgiveness from Those You Have Hurt;
  • Coping with Prison Noise;
  • Understanding Compulsive Behaviour;
  • Preparing for Release.

The Prison Bible also has other features such as:

  • A goal setting chart;
  • Scripture references for dealing with various emotions;
  • An address book for family and friends.
