Overview
1WAY FM is now able to offer Nationally Accredited Training for CUF20401 Certificate II in Broadcasting (Radio).
This certificate is recognised within the Radio industry and by State and Commonwealth educational authorities.
Training takes place at the studios of 1WAY FM on a weekday evening from 7:00pm until 9:30pm, or at other mutually convenient times, at a pace that is adjusted to meet the needs of students.
Practical activities are introduced early in the training program and included in as many sessions as possible. Trainees are required to complete exercises in their own time outside of the classroom to ensure that they have mastered the skills and have the knowledge required to become a broadcaster. These exercises may include practise operating studio equipment, assisting experienced broadcasters, undertaking research and working on projects.
Trainees are assessed during their training and may be asked to undertake assignments or assessment during and at the completion of each component of the training package. There is an emphasis on practical skills and experience rather than theoretical knowledge. The training is organised around themes, such as How to produce a program, or How to ensure that the legal requirements of broadcasting are met.
Please contact us via our contact us page if you are interested in becoming a volunteer with 1WAY FM and undertaking our training course.

Projects
Trainees acquire skills through real or simulated projects and activities at radio stations. Trainers will schedule sessions for revision, practice and supervision of individual or group projects.
Assessment
Assessment may take place on the job, off the job or through a combination of these. Off the job assessment will be undertaken in a closely simulated workplace environment.
Assessment will be undertaken on a progressive basis throughout the training program. Work-based projects provide the framework for a holistic approach to assessing clusters of units. Learning activities and associated assessment tasks have been devised around an assessment framework based on major and minor projects supported by a learning journal or diary.
Major Project
Trainees are required to record a simulated live-to-air program of 60 minutes duration containing:
- music and announcing style appropriate to the target audience
- news (via the internet), weather and four announcements
- vox pops recorded by the trainee on a portable recorder and edited by the trainee into a short segment
A running sheet and brief self-evaluation of the program must accompany the recording.
Minor Project
A portfolio containing:
- an outline for a program, which will be chosen to suit the interests of the Trainee
- raw material (audio and print) for the program
This project provides a framework for demonstrating research and information gathering skills in the context of acquiring knowledge about the radio industry.
Learning Journal
The journal or diary contributes to evidence of the trainee’s ability to collect and organise information. Here trainees keep copies of assessment tasks or exercises completed during the training program. Copies of all audio material produced by trainees should also be kept, as they provide evidence of progress towards achieving competence.
Costs
The course costs $100 for members of 1WAY FM.
