DESCRIPTION:Canberra Nara Peace Park & Lennox Gardens (behind Hyatt Hotel Canberra) Enjoy the spectacular visual of 2,000 shimmering candles at the 10th annual Canberra Nara Candle Festival on Saturday 27 October, as we celebrate the 19th year of the Sister City relationship shared between Canberra and Nara, Japan. Visitors will be mesmerised by the sounds of Japanese music and enchanting lighting that highlights the features of the beautiful Canberra Nara Peace Park. The festival brings a wide variety of Japanese and Australian culture with arts and crafts such as calligraphy, lantern making, origami, ikebana and kite flying. This year's event welcomes George Kanikawa and Noriko Tadano as seen on Australia's Got Talent and the sensational Japanese drumming ensemble Taikoz. The festival also features Japanese cuisine, markets and stalls with visitors able to take part in various activities including drumming and ikebana workshops. Not to be missed are the martial arts demonstrations and mochi pounding - a demonstration of traditional rice-cake making by the Embassy of Japan. At the Embassy tent you can also try some traditional Japanese games. Parking is available in the Parliamentary zone, with a free shuttle bus to Canberra Nara Peace Park. Public parking is not available in the Hyatt Hotel car park.

DESCRIPTION:Join the newly incorporated Canberra Opera Inc. for a night of scenes from two of the world’s most loved operas, Carmen and Rigoletto. The music of Carmen has been widely acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, and atmosphere and for the skill with which Bizet represented, musically, the emotions and suffering of his characters. For this performance we have selected extended scenes from Acts One and Two. Highlights will include the Habanera, Toreador’s song and the lovely duet between Micaela and Don José. The second half will feature an exciting abridged version of Rigoletto. It tells a tale of two cursed men, the Duke of Mantua and Rigoletto, his hunch-backed court jester. The curse is fulfilled when Gilda, Rigoletto's daughter, falls in love with the Duke and eventually sacrifices her life to save him from the assassins hired by her father. Rigoletto has many well-known favourites including La donna è mobile (The Duke), Caro nome (Gilda), Fawning Courtiers (Rigoletto) and The Quartet (The Duke, Gilda, Maddalena and Rigoletto). This opera is filled with revenge, hatred, love and passion. Performances at St Ninian’s Uniting Church Hall, Cnr Mouat and Brigalow Streets, Lyneham ACT Evening: 8pm Friday 24 & 31 May; and Saturday 25 May, 1 June 2013 Matinee: 2pm Sunday 26 May and 2 June 2013 Adult $30 Pensioner/Senior/ Full-time Students (under 26 years) $25 Child (15 years and under) $20 How to purchase tickets: Bookings at www.canberraopera.org.au/tickets or 0439 739 631 (6pm - 9pm).
