Strong - Rita Marchant

Rock, Folk/Acoustic, Pop

In Strong, Rita documents a life lived with remarkable strength of character. She tells the stories of those vulnerable times in life when we need to reach for strength outside of ourselves.  Rita is fascinated by the paradox between the frailty of the human condition and the amazing strength of the human spirit.

“Do or Die” is Rita’s anthem for life: take hold of it, which she co-wrote with Ashley Farrell.  The nostalgic “Grandad’s Grand Piano” which honors the passing of Rita’s father-in-law will get a lot of radio play.  Although exploring themes of broken relationships, loss and grief, Strong is incredibly uplifting.   I liked the sassy, flirty “Have Mercy” about the initial stages of falling in love, and  “This I promise you” a love song about commitment which  Rita aptly describes musically as ‘Santana meets Sade’.  For me, the stand out track is “Strong (Woman)” a beautiful loving tribute to a friend with a broken heart.  It brings tears to my eyes because it reminds me of the hope a friend can show you when you can’t see your own way out.  The strong earthy guitar reinforces the sincerity of the lyrics.

Rita seems like an old friend because Strong connects with the pain and joy that we all experience in this life.  Rita’s music whether it be rocking guitar or acoustics, elicits a response, you will want to dance or sway.  This is a substantial debut album and it has left me wanting more.  Watch this space because Rita will keep getting better and better.

If you like Jennifer Knapp, Nichole Nordeman, Carolyn Arends or Kendall Payne you will enjoy Rita Marchant’s Strong.
